Photovoltaic modules

What are photovoltaic modules and how do they work?

Photovoltaic modules, commonly known as photovoltaic panels or PV panels, are made up of photocells that capture the solar energy to convert it into electricity. They are the main building block of any photovoltaic installation. The semiconductor material used in them, usually silicon, is sensitive to light and produces electricity when exposed to sunlight through a physical phenomenon called the photovoltaic effect. With the help of an inverter, the direct current produced by the PV panels is then converted into alternating current, which can be successfully used to power various types of electrical equipment used in households, businesses or farms.

Photovoltaic modules - installation methods

In order to ensure their optimal efficiency, photovoltaic modules are placed on support structures, which can be mounted both on the roofs of buildings and on the ground. It is important that photovoltaic modules face south, are not shaded and their inclination angle is 30°-40°. Under such conditions, we can expect that a photovoltaic installation with a capacity of 1 kWp located in Poland will generate on average about 900-980 kWh of electricity per year.

Types of photovoltaic modules

The offer of photovoltaic modules is constantly expanding due to the growing popularity of photovoltaics. Currently, the market mainly offers two types of PV panels. The first type is made of monocrystalline cells, while the second one is made of polycrystalline cells - these, however, are becoming less and less popular due to relatively high production costs.

What to look for when choosing photovoltaic modules?

When choosing photovoltaic modules, you should first of all pay attention to factors such as:

  • power output – currently, the most popular PV modules are 330 to 450 Wp,
  • efficiency – for high-end photovoltaic panels, it is 18-20% on average,
  • thermal resistance – photovoltaic module manufacturers currently offer products with thermal resistance estimated at around 90%,
  • product warranty – reputable photovoltaic module manufacturers provide a warranty for 10-15 years, some even for 25 years,
  • power performance guarantee – typically, a linear guarantee from well-known and reputable PV panel manufacturers offers 25 years for an average of 80-85% of the initial performance of the PV modules.

How to choose good photovoltaic modules?

The choice of individual components of a photovoltaic installation, including PV panels and the inverter, largely determines the efficiency of the system. This, in turn, translates into the period of return on investment and the level of savings possible to achieve from renewable energy sources. In the case of photovoltaic modules, it is worth paying attention to their individual parameters described in the datasheet provided by the manufacturer. Apart from the parameters related to the output power of the panels, the datasheet provides additional information concerning the reliability tests or certificates obtained. Every year, the PVEL institute (PV Evolution Lab) tests photovoltaic modules and presents a special ranking. It is worth following this information on a regular basis and, before choosing PV panels, check the brands recommended by specialists in order to ensure the best value for money.
